Back in the mid-2000s when I was probably about 7~ years old, I was browsing through the Walmart bargain bin hunting for interesting computer games when I stumbled upon an intriguing (...at least to me) game titled Petz 5 from Ubi Soft (yeah, still two words at the time). It was cheap, so I was allowed to get it, and man oh man did it entertain me for ages.

I spent a shit ton of time playing Petz 5 when I was younger, and it's still something I like to occasionally visit to this day. Many of the sites that used to host mods have since gone down, but there are still archives for the downloads and people still compile lists of active communities to this day. Actually, I was inspired to create this by someone else on Neocities who created a page for their own Petz awhile ago (I can't find it tho).

Petz was heavily stylised with the animals and items being shaped out of weirdly textured balls (a trait shared with other PF Magic games), while playscene backgrounds were simple 3D images with areas designating elevation. The game actually featured an in-game editor for playscenes, allowing the player to use images to create their own areas for their petz to visit.

Petz 5 was the 5th game in the Petz series, developed by Studio Mythos and published by Ubi Soft (still 2 words at this point). The earlier games, released from 1995-1999, had been developed and published by PF Magic. In addition to Petz, PF Magic had also developed similar games under the name of Oddballz and Babyz that never received continuation.

After the release of Petz 5 in 2002, there were no new games in the series until 2007 when Ubisoft essentially said "fuck it" and turned the series from quirky PC games to a series of console shovelware for years to come.

Petz 5 was fun little game that allowed the player to adopt little virtual pets who would run around either your desktop or in-game areas (known as playscenes) and could be interacted with.

iirc the game comes with about 20 dog breeds and 20 cat breeds, but you can also add modded species to the game (which I always enjoyed; all my petz featured here are custom "breedz"). It was also possible to mod in new playscenes and items as well. A mod known as PetzA was also incredibly popular as it added in helpful utilities and cheats.

Another interesting feature was the ability to create webpages from inside the game using the Petz Publisher feature. The game contained page templates and provided a GUI for players to add images, text, and links to make their own page. There were also "live" pages you could make using the a Petz plugin for Internet Explorer, but to no surprise this is unusable in the modern day. This page was actually made from the "Pawprintz" template from within my Windows XP virtual machine!
